About
Benavidez vs Opetaia hospitality depends on a fight that both men have agreed to in public but not yet on paper. As of 2 November 2026, David Benavidez vs Jai Opetaia has no announced date, venue, broadcaster or contract. What is on record: the two agreed in the ring at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, on 12 September 2026 to meet on Cinco de Mayo weekend in May 2027, The Ring reported that T-Mobile Arena was the verbal target, and the WBC has named Opetaia as the mandatory challenger for the winner of Benavidez vs Michal Cieslak.
Where things stand on 2 November 2026
- Agreed verbally: in the ring on 12 September 2026, Benavidez said “Cinco de Mayo. Next year.” and Opetaia replied “All right, done. Done,” FightMag reported.
- Target window: Cinco de Mayo weekend, May 2027. 5 May 2027 is a Wednesday, so the nearest Saturdays are 1 May and 8 May. Neither has been named.
- Reported venue: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, according to The Ring on 21 September 2026. Not announced.
- Sanctioning: on 14 September 2026 the WBC ruled that the winner of Mikaelian vs Opetaia, which Opetaia won, becomes the mandatory contender for the winner of Cieslak vs Benavidez.
- Still to be announced: a date, a venue, a broadcaster, a promoter and a signed contract.
What has to happen first
Benavidez boxes first. He faces the WBC champion Michal Cieslak on Saturday 5 December 2026 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, with his WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles and Cieslak's WBC title on the line. The PBC pay-per-view is on DAZN through Prime Video, starting at 5pm Pacific time, which is 1am on Sunday 6 December in the UK. At the launch press conference in Los Angeles on 28 October, Benavidez said: “I'm not looking past Cieslak.”
That fight also ends Benavidez's current promotional deal with Sampson Lewkowicz, Sports Illustrated reported on 23 October. Benavidez told The Last Stand podcast, as Boxing News reported on 21 October, that he will sign a three-fight contract after the Cieslak fight, with Opetaia first on his list, followed by Artur Beterbiev and possibly Oleksandr Usyk.
Opetaia's next step is less settled. He has been linked with Deontay Wilder on the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua card at Principality Stadium, Cardiff, on Friday 11 December 2026, and started a full fight camp on the Gold Coast in October, though the bout had not been signed by 2 November. Details are on our Wilder vs Opetaia event page. In September Opetaia told The Ring: “I don't want to wait until May for my next fight.”
The promotional side matters too. Opetaia signed with Dana White's Zuffa Boxing in January 2026, and in May Benavidez said he would not fight for a Zuffa title, while leaving the door open to a deal. On the night the two shook hands, White described them as “the two baddest dudes in the world in that weight class,” AAP reported.
The fighters
David Benavidez
Benavidez was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on 17 December 1996 and is unbeaten at 32-0 with 26 knockouts. Nicknamed The Mexican Monster, he has won world titles at super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweight. He took the WBA (Super) and WBO cruiserweight titles by knocking out Gilberto Ramirez in the sixth round at T-Mobile Arena on 2 May 2026, his first fight at the weight, and vacated his light heavyweight belts in October 2026. He fights orthodox, stands 6ft 1in and has a 74.5in reach.
Jai Opetaia
Opetaia was born in Sydney on 30 June 1995 and is unbeaten at 31-0 with 24 knockouts. A southpaw, he stands 6ft 2in with a 76in reach and has boxed his whole professional career at cruiserweight. He has held The Ring title since beating Mairis Briedis on the Gold Coast on 2 July 2022, won the inaugural Zuffa Boxing title against Brandon Glanton on 8 March 2026, and added the WBA (Regular) belt by stopping Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round at T-Mobile Arena on 12 September 2026. The IBF stripped him of its title in March 2026.
The titles that could be on the line
- Benavidez's WBA (Super) and WBO cruiserweight titles.
- The WBC cruiserweight title, if Benavidez beats Cieslak on 5 December.
- Opetaia's The Ring, Zuffa Boxing and WBA (Regular) cruiserweight titles.
The IBF title is vacant, so even with every other belt involved the fight would not be for the undisputed championship. Nobody has been undisputed at cruiserweight since Oleksandr Usyk, whose reign ended in March 2019 when he moved up to heavyweight. Every division is tracked on our world championship title fights page.
Why Las Vegas and Cinco de Mayo weekend
Both fighters had their biggest night of 2026 at T-Mobile Arena. DAZN billed Benavidez's fight with Ramirez as “a Cinco de Mayo blockbuster”, and four months later Opetaia stopped Mikaelian in the same building with Benavidez watching from ringside. Our T-Mobile Arena venue page and guide to the arena's fight history cover the venue.
Las Vegas is eight hours behind the UK in early May. A Saturday evening main event there lands in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, which is worth knowing whether you plan to travel or to host guests for the broadcast.
Hospitality at a Las Vegas fight night
A hospitality evening at a major Las Vegas arena fight generally means a lounge or suite with food and drinks before the main fights, then seats in the arena bowl for the headline bouts. Once a date and venue are announced for Benavidez vs Opetaia, the hospitality options for that venue will be added to this page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Benavidez vs Opetaia is targeted for Cinco de Mayo weekend in May 2027, and The Ring reported that the two verbally agreed on T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Neither the date nor the venue had been announced by 2 November 2026; because 5 May 2027 is a Wednesday, the weekend points to Saturday 1 May or Saturday 8 May.
Benavidez first has to get past Michal Cieslak on 5 December 2026 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, because the WBC's order names the winner of that fight as Opetaia's next opponent. A contract then has to be agreed between Opetaia's promoter, Zuffa Boxing, and whoever Benavidez signs with after the Cieslak fight.
Benavidez's WBA (Super) and WBO cruiserweight titles, plus the WBC belt if he beats Cieslak, would meet Opetaia's The Ring, Zuffa Boxing and WBA (Regular) titles. The IBF title is vacant, so it would not be an undisputed championship fight.
Benavidez is 32-0 with 26 knockouts and Opetaia is 31-0 with 24 knockouts, as of 30 October 2026. Benavidez, 29, fights orthodox; Opetaia, 31, is a southpaw and an inch taller.
Las Vegas is eight hours behind the UK in early May, so a Saturday evening main event there would land in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time. A fight time will only be set once the date and card are announced.
