That is the short answer for anyone dressing for the Qatar Goodwood Festival, popularly known as Glorious Goodwood, a five-day flat racing meeting at Goodwood Racecourse near Chichester, West Sussex. Richmond is the enclosure with the written rule, and it is written for men. The Gordon Enclosure has no formal dress code at any fixture, with a separate festival request to dress smartly. The Lennox Enclosure carries style suggestions and no stated rules. If you are booked into hospitality, the enclosure your table sits in decides what you wear, not the meeting.

What is the dress code at Goodwood Racecourse?

Goodwood publishes guidance for all three enclosures and enforces a requirement in only one of them. Its own plan-your-day pages encourage racegoers to wear whatever makes them feel best and comfortable for a day at the races, then set out what each enclosure asks for. The Richmond Enclosure is the one with a rule. Gordon and Lennox set expectations instead.

Two things people expect to find in those rules are not there. Goodwood publishes no ban on jeans anywhere: the word does not appear in its published dress code guidance. The bans on fancy dress and sportswear belong to the Richmond Enclosure alone and are not racecourse-wide.

Do you have to wear a hat at Glorious Goodwood?

No. Goodwood's dress-code page sets no hat requirement in any enclosure. That holds for the Richmond Enclosure, for the Thursday, and for every other day of the meeting. Hats at Goodwood are a convention rather than a published rule.

King Edward VII called the meeting "a garden party with racing tacked on", a line Goodwood still quotes on its own history page. Linen and a Panama in the sun is the summer-tailoring convention that grew around that description. It comes from coverage of the meeting rather than from the racecourse, and it is not in Goodwood's published dress-code guidance.

What is the dress code in the Richmond Enclosure?

The Richmond Enclosure is the only Goodwood enclosure with an enforced dress rule. Gentlemen aged 16 and over are required to wear a suit jacket, a long-sleeved collared shirt and a tie, along with full-length trousers. Boys aged 7 to 15 must wear a long-sleeved collared button-down shirt. Fancy dress and sportswear are not permitted.

Goodwood calls Richmond its premier enclosure. It sits in the March Grandstand, directly opposite the winning post and the Parade Ring, and the racecourse lists covered seating opposite the winning post, prime views of the finish line, Parade and Pre-Parade Ring viewing, The Oak Tree Lawn, the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar, The Charlton Hunt, The Long View, The Double Trigger and pre-bookable hospitality dining among its features. Can you get into the Richmond Enclosure during Glorious Goodwood?

Not on a public admission ticket. Goodwood states that during the Qatar Goodwood Festival the Richmond Enclosure is only available to Members and their guests. Moving up an enclosure on the day by paying the difference works everywhere at Goodwood except into Richmond during festival week. Outside the festival the restriction does not apply.

The membership behind that sentence is the Goodwood Horseracing Club, which the racecourse runs itself. Goodwood publishes no guest allowance for Members, and no route or timing for a Member's guest badge.

One question is genuinely open, and it is worth settling before you plan the day rather than after. Several of the racecourse's hospitality venues sit physically inside the Richmond Enclosure. The Charlton Hunt sits on the first floor of the Charlton Stand inside Richmond, overlooking the Horse Walk, and The Secret Garden, one of two hospitality venues Goodwood describes as exclusive to the festival, sits in a prime position within the same enclosure. Goodwood does not publish how either sits alongside the Members-only sentence during festival week. It is not written as an exception, and it is not ruled out either. What is the dress code in the Gordon Enclosure?

There is no formal dress code in the Gordon Enclosure across all fixtures. For the Qatar Goodwood Festival specifically, Goodwood asks guests to dress in a smart and elegant manner, and states that shorts and trainers are permitted. Those two statements belong together. The festival raises the tone without setting a standard anyone is measured against.

Goodwood describes Gordon as the social hub at the racecourse. Its published features include covered seating within the Sussex Stand, the Sussex Bar as its largest bar, the Sip & Saddle Bar, live music, Parade and Pre-Parade Ring access, trackside viewing inside the final furlong, and The Earl's Lawn, which Goodwood lists as exclusive to the Qatar Goodwood Festival. At those bars too, alcohol is served to over-18s only and ID may be requested.

One practical point decides more outfits than the rules do. Goodwood's published festival timings have gates opening at 11:00 and closing at 20:00, with the racecourse's note that all times are subject to confirmation. What is the dress code in the Lennox Enclosure?

Lennox is Goodwood's most relaxed enclosure and its guidance is suggestion only, with no stated rules. The look the racecourse describes for it is a casual garden party. It is also the enclosure Goodwood positions for families, listing a large children's playground, flat grassy picnic spots near the course, covered seating with good views of the course, fairground and children's activities at selected fixtures, and live music exclusively at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Two caveats. Goodwood's racing FAQs allow ticket holders in every enclosure to use the playground, which is a statement about the playground and not about admission to the Lennox Enclosure itself. And Goodwood's festival page refers to Lennox Enclosure renovations, with the Lennox Enclosure Grandstand "making way for an exciting new chapter at Goodwood Racecourse". The racecourse publishes nothing further about what that means for any given meeting.

How do the three enclosures differ?

Richmond, Gordon and Lennox are all family names of the dukes who own the Goodwood Estate, so the names themselves tell you nothing about what each enclosure gives you. What is the dress code if you are in hospitality?

It is a real difference for a guest list. A Richmond-based day means every man aged 16 and over arrives in a jacket and tie whatever the forecast says. What should you wear on Ladies' Day?

Ladies' Day at the Qatar Goodwood Festival is the Thursday, the third of the five days. Goodwood sets no separate Ladies' Day dress code and no hat rule for it. What your enclosure asks for on the Tuesday, it asks for on the Thursday: the stated requirement for men in Richmond, smart and elegant in Gordon, and suggestions only in Lennox.

The day opens with the Markel Magnolia Cup, run down Goodwood's home straight and ridden by women who are not professional jockeys. Goodwood describes it as the most prestigious charity race run in the UK, and names the Education Above All Foundation as its charity partner.
