Goodwood Revival Dress Code: What to Wear

Period dress is not compulsory at the Goodwood Revival, the September historic race meeting at Goodwood Motor Circuit near Chichester. Goodwood says most visitors wear it anyway, and its style guide draws on the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The one Revival dress code Goodwood publishes is for Central Paddock, where it requires a jacket and tie for men and a dress or suit for women from anyone who qualifies for access. It publishes no separate code for its hospitality venues.

Do you have to dress up for the Goodwood Revival?

No. Dressing up is optional at the Goodwood Revival, but Goodwood's FAQ says "the vast majority of Revival visitors dress in period style", and adds that you will feel much more involved if you do. A full outfit is not needed either: Goodwood's style guide says accessories "may be all you need", and names a silk scarf, classic sunglasses, a vintage handbag or a stylish hat.

The style guide welcomes vintage pieces mixed with modern favourites, and its own list of 1940s pieces even includes utility-style jeans. Many visitors go "to great lengths to achieve that authentic look", in the words of Goodwood's FAQ, so for a first visit we suggest period clothes rather than a shop-bought costume.

What is the Goodwood Revival dress code for hospitality guests?

Goodwood publishes no separate dress code for its Goodwood Revival hospitality venues, and none of its hospitality listings mentions dress. The one written code, for Central Paddock, binds only those who qualify for access. The listings include paddock access without naming the paddock, so they do not say whether a hospitality badge counts as Central Paddock access. The safe course for a hosted day is to dress to the Central Paddock code anyway.

What era do Goodwood Revival outfits come from?

Goodwood Revival outfits come from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The Revival revisits the original racing years of Goodwood Motor Circuit, 1948 to 1966, which Goodwood calls "the golden age of motor racing", and its races are for cars and bikes of that era, plus some pre-war classes. The clothing brief is looser: the decades are a starting point for ideas, and Goodwood's style guide lists pieces for each.

Goodwood also suggests theming an outfit around that year's celebrations. For 2026's La Dolce Vita theme it published an Italian style guide by Amber Butchart. The 2027 theme had not been announced by 25 September 2026.

What do men and women wear to the Goodwood Revival?

The simplest base at the Goodwood Revival is a jacket and tie for men and a dress or a suit for women, because that pairing is Goodwood's Central Paddock code. Beyond it, Goodwood's style guide is not split by gender. It describes the Revival look as drawing on the post-war era's "sharp tailoring" and "the more functional garbs of motor sport heroes".

Outfits for men

Goodwood's 2026 menswear guide sums up the aim as sprezzatura, "the art of looking immaculate without appearing to try", and its style guide puts the character in the details: a pocket square, a bow tie or a different tie knot. The menswear guide's motor racing twist is a pair of tan leather driving gloves tucked into a jacket's breast pocket in place of a silk pocket square.

Outfits for women

From Goodwood's 1960s list, the skirt suit with a single-breasted jacket is a period outfit that also meets the Central Paddock code. The style guide's other ideas include a tailored blazer worn over a dress and a bold red lipstick, which it calls "a Revival favourite for good reason". On site, Goodwood lists Betty's Salons, period salons offering hairstyles from 1940s victory rolls to the 1960s beehive.

What is not allowed at the Goodwood Revival?

At the Goodwood Revival, Goodwood asks visitors not to wear controversial uniforms or clothing, or costumes and accessories that appropriate another culture. Replica weapons are "strictly prohibited anywhere on site", except when authorised re-enactment groups use them in official event activities, and bags are searched at every entrance. Goodwood reserves the right to refuse entry, or to ask visitors to leave, if it considers their attire inappropriate or offensive.

Where do people find Revival outfits?

Goodwood's own advice is to start with what you already own, then look to resale sites and local vintage and charity shops, in keeping with its "Revive & Thrive" ethos of dressing in vintage or second-hand at the Goodwood Revival. On site, it lists true vintage pieces in the Arcade d'Aubigny, pre-owned looks in the Revival Style Village, pop-up boutiques around the event and exhibitors on the Revival High Street.

What is the Best Dressed Competition?

The Best Dressed Competition is the Goodwood Revival's style contest, which Goodwood bills as "the most glamorous celebration of second-hand style". It is presented by Ancestry under a three-year partnership that began with the 2026 Revival, and in 2026 it was judged at 15:00 each day on the Revival Style Stage.

Goodwood's Revival page offers visitors "the chance to be scouted" for it, and Goodwood invites anyone keen to compete, or simply to watch, to the stage.
