Andrea Bocelli, the Tuscan Tenor Who Crossed Over

Andrea Bocelli was born on 22 September 1958 in Lajatico, Tuscany. His win in the newcomers’ section of the 1994 Sanremo Music Festival, with "Il mare calmo della sera", opened a career that has run for more than three decades and sold more than 90 million records worldwide. He turns 68 in the September before the Cardiff concert.

Italy made him a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2025, raising the Grand Officer grade he had held since 2006. He was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010, for live theatre. "The Prayer", his duet with Céline Dion, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. He has been nominated for Grammy Awards without winning one.

Romanza and what "crossover" actually means

Romanza, released on 23 September 1997, sold over 20 million copies and is the best-selling Italian-language album of all time. It is the record that took him to a worldwide audience, and it is the reason the crossover label stuck. He is a tenor who spends much of his working life outside the opera house, singing repertoire that sits between it and the pop chart, and that is where the wider audience comes from.

Romanza reaches its thirtieth anniversary on 23 September 2027. That falls four and a half months after the Cardiff concert and is a separate occasion, not something the concert marks.
